In 2016, President and CEO Richard Shinto, M.D. of InnovaCare announced the addition of three new executives to the Medicare Advantage organization in Puerto Rico. Jonathan Meyers became the new chief actuary officer, Penelope Kokkinides took over as chief administrative officer and Mike Sortino is InnovaCare’s new chief accounting officer. While all three new members of the leadership team bring a wealth of experience to the organization, Kokkinides has over 20 years experience with Medicare and Medicaid. Before joining InnovaCare, she worked for Centerlight HealthCare, Touchstone Health and AmeriChoice. In a press release, Shinto was quoted as saying “We’re privileged to have them as part of our team.”
When ideamensch interviewed Kokkinides in late 2016, she mentioned that she is an organized executive who easily prioritizes tasks. She’s also a fan of using technology, such as video conferencing, to get more done in less time. In addition to staying connected, Kokkinides enjoys keeping on top of current industry trends through books and articles, while considering how the most promising new trends will fit into InnovaCare’s overall business strategy.
Dr. Shinto brought a wealth of experience to InnovaCare as well. After being a practicing pulmonologist and an internist, Shinto worked for MedPartners, Cal Optima Health Plan, Medical Pathways Management, NAMM California and Aveta Inc. before joining InnovaCare. Under Rick Shinto’s leadership, MMM Holdings, LLC, a subsidiary of InnovaCare, was voted one of Puerto Rico’s Best Employers in 2014. At the time, Shinto said ‘Thirty percent of our employees have been working with us between eight and 13 years, in the company’s 14-year history. This shows their great sense of responsibility and commitment, until reaching a warm work environment in which, more than colleagues, we are a big corporate family.”
InnovaCare operates two Medicare Advantage plans in Puerto Rico, MMM Healthcare and PMC Medicare Choice, which together have almost 200,000 members. MMM offers a variety of different plans, with one designed for individuals with cardiovascular diseases or diabetes mellitus. PMC Medicare Choice has two HMO style plans, with one designed for Puerto Rico’s special needs population who receive both Medicaid and Medicare benefits.
